PAMET Instructor demonstrating the process of pressing pulp into briquettes
|
This project trains interested women's groups on how to recycle paper and other agrucultural waste to make fire briquettes as an alternative source of household energy. By doing so, PAMET seeks to address the long-term problems associated with deforestation and poverty in Malawi, particularly among women in rural areas. Women are mobilized and trained in briquette making skills so that they can primarily use the products in place of firewood and thereby reducing the amount of time spent and distance walked when fetching firewood, which has become scarce. A strong communication network between PAMET and the groups exists to monitor and evaluate the groups' continual progress.
